Steps on Creating Your Own Amazing Cosplay Tail from Faux Fur

Buying ready-to-wear cosplay tails is easy. However, it can be costly and it can also limit your options in terms of color and design. Before you begin, have a look at these amazing cosplay tails for ideas. If you want to create your own amazing cosplay tail, just follow the basic steps below:

Step 1. Draw your pattern on a large sheet of paper and trace it on the back of some faux fur.

If you are an expert in creating patterns, you may create your desired style directly on the back of the faux fur. But if not, draw it first on a sheet of paper so it will be easy to make adjustments. Be sure to include a seam allowance of around 0.5 inch.

Step 2. Cut the pattern from your faux fur, then create another one.

You will need two pieces of the pattern for the sides of the tail. They should match when you put them on top of each other, with the fur parts on the inner side.

Step 3. Comb the fur away from the edges.

This step is necessary so the fur won’t get caught up while you’re sewing. Just comb it inwards.

Step 4. Sew the edges of the tail together.

You can use a sewing machine or hand sew it if you don’t have a machine. When you sew them, the fur portion should be inside. Don’t sew the top part just yet.

Step 5. Reverse the fabric to show the right side of the tail.

After sewing all the edges, you can now slowly reverse the fabric so the faux fur will be the one that is visible. This technique will hide the threads and the sew lines as these will now be on the inner part of the tail.

Step 6. Stuff your cosplay tail with fiberfill.

You may also use polyester stuffing that is usually available in DIY shops, or in fabric stores. You can use a stick to make it easier to do this task.

Step 7. Sew the top of the tail to close it.

It’s now time to close the top of the tail. You may also sew in some hooks or cords so you can easily attach your new tail to your costume.

Step 8. Arrange the fur with a comb. Comb or brush the fur of your new tail downwards to make it look more authentic.

Mastered the tail? How about making some cat ears or fangs to match your costume!
